Faro inaugurates video monitoring system in city centre

A video monitoring system comprising 32 cameras was installed “to prevent crimes and repress traffic violations”.

Faro City Hall inaugurated a video monitoring system this Tuesday, August 27, to prevent crimes and repress traffic violations on the principal axes and several key locations in the city’s centre, announced the Municipality.

The inauguration ceremony of the video surveillance system took place this morning at 11h00 at the facilities of the Faro Public Security Police District Command, on the same day the Police force is celebrating its 137th anniversary.

The ceremony was attended by Faro Mayor Rogério Bacalhau and Secretary of State for Internal Administration Telmo Correia.

The installation of the network comes after Faro City Council announced last year that it had approved a contract to install 32 cameras of four different types, totalling an investment of more than €550,000.

Among the works foreseen in the contract were the expansion of the fibre optic network and the preparation of support infrastructures for installing the system in “key locations”, namely in the commercial area, on the main road axes and in the city centre.

With the inauguration of this video monitoring system, the Municipality and the PSP will be able to monitor public and private assets, “prevent crimes in places where there is a reasonable risk of their occurrence”, and simultaneously prevent and repress traffic violations, highlighted the Municipality.

The system can capture and record audio “whenever there is a concrete danger to the safety of people and property”. The cameras will be operated by the Public Security Police (PSP), operating uninterruptedly 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
