Faro injects extra €1.1 million into long-awaited new bridge

Faro council is set to inject an extra €1.1 million into the construction of the long-awaited new bridge to Faro island after the previous tender failed to attract bidders.

This brings the total cost of the bridge’s construction up to €3.5 million, most of which will be paid for by the council.

Correio da Manhã reports that the council negotiated with the government and Sociedade Polis, so that the cost of the work would be divided among the three, but was told Polis did not have the money to contribute towards the project.

The news came on the same day Faro council approved its ‘Grandes Opções do Plano e Orçamento 2019’, which serves as the municipality’s budget and policy guidelines.

The budget represents a sum of €39.7 million, €2 million more than 2018.

Among the main projects are the renovation of public areas and roads, improvements at local schools, renovations of the obsolete municipal car park, support for local associations and parish councils, land planning and the bid for ‘Faro, European Capital of Culture’.

The construction of Faro’s new campsite and the construction of a new kennel are also among the highlights.
