The city’s popular festival returns on September 6, 7 and 8 with seafood galore and live entertainment.
Albufeira Fisherman’s Festival is celebrating its Silver Wedding on September 6, 7 and 8. This year’s occasion commemorates 25 years of paying tribute to the fishing industry in Albufeira, comprising 75 professional fishermen.
According to José Carlos Rolo, the mayor of Albufeira, the Fisherman’s Festival represents a dedication to the region’s heritage and culture. It acknowledges the importance of fishermen and their historical economic impact on the municipality. Despite technological advancements that aid them while at sea, this community still faces and overcomes daily struggles to secure their livelihoods.
The mayor highlights “that this is one of the most awaited and cherished celebrations by the “Albufeirense” community. Every year, it brings together family and friends, some of whom reside in other parts of the country and travel here to participate in the event, which allows everyone to learn a little about our history, traditions, culture, and crafts and try the best gastronomy and wines in the region.”
During the three days, the Praça dos Pescadores will be perfectly decorated with dozens of taverns from the various local associations competing to offer the best snacks. Visitors will be treated to a tasting experience featuring “xerém”, “choquinhos”, squid in ink, a variety of seafood, mackerel, “feijoada de buzios”, fried cuttlefish, cataplana, fish stew, and the renowned regional desserts, with a focus on Dom Rodrigos, fig, almond, and carob cakes, as well as delicious orange tarts.
At night, local artist Tomás Faísca takes to the Praça dos Pescadores stage to warm up the crowd before headlining act Emanuel, one of the most recognised national popular music artists, takes over.
The second night, Saturday, September 7, as is already a tradition, is dedicated to Albufeira’s Folkloric Festival.
On Sunday, September 8, the event’s last day, the musical programme begins with dance music with Duo 64, followed by a performance by Zé Amaro, a pioneering country singer known as the “Portuguese cowboy”.
The event opens its doors on Friday, September 6, at 18h00.
