First Portuguese baby infected in womb by Covid-19 ‘recovering in Lisbon’

The first baby to have been infected ‘in utero’ with SARS-Cov-2 was born prematurely and in a critical condition at the São Francisco Xavier hospital in Lisbon two weeks ago. The little girl had to be put onto a ventilator, but is described as ‘recovering’ albeit still testing positive.

Over 130 women in Portugal have given birth to ‘perfectly healthy babies’ in spite of having been infected themselves.

Indeed, worldwide there have only been a handful of cases where infection has passed from mother to unborn child.
