Another fisherman has tragically fallen to his death from cliffs on the west coast – bringing the number of fatalities this year to three.
Fernando Sequeira, 45, born in Silves, fell while returning from an afternoon’s fishing in the area, known as “Caixões”, between the beaches of Murração and Barriga, in the borough of Vila do Bispo. A friend accompanying him told Diário de Notícias that Sequeira began to feel ill moments before he fell.
The rescue operation took approximately four hours and involved 14 bombeiros from the local fire station. Four of them had to climb down a 100-metre cliff to locate and recover Fernando Sequeira’s body.
The chief of the bombeiros told Diário de Notícias that when they arrived, the victim was already dead with multiple wounds to his head and face.
This was the 15th accidental fall along the Algarve coast this year, and the third fatality.
