Fishing heritage inspires new benches in Carvoeiro

New benches shaped like fishing boats to pay tribute to Carvoeiro’s history as a fishing village have been unveiled on Rua do Barranco.

Led by the Lagoa and Carvoeiro parish union, the initiative aims to keep the village’s maritime heritage alive and celebrate the fishermen who are a key part of Carvoeiro’s identity.

The benches also feature flowerboxes which aim to “embellish the public space” and make the tourist hotspot more inviting.

Local artist Luísa Aleixo was in charge of painting and decorating the benches, says the parish union, adding that the project fits in with its strategy to breathe new life into public spaces, particularly by helping preserve Carvoeiro’s local identity.
