Five minutes of rain flood downtown Albufeira

Albufeira affected by floods yet again

This Thursday morning’s heavy rain has already caused floods in several parts of the Algarve – particularly downtown Albufeira.

CMTV, the news channel of tabloid newspaper Correio da Manhã, reports that just five minutes of rain was enough to flood several parts of downtown Albufeira, where water is already ‘invading’ several businesses in the area.

Just last month, Albufeira announced the start of major construction works aimed at reducing flooding risks in the lower areas of the town. The €2 million project is viewed as a critical step to prevent these kinds of recurring floods, which were at their worst in 2015 when they caused around €10 million in damages.

Meanwhile, floods have also been reported in Moncarapacho, Olhão, where a car was filmed being dragged by the strong current of a flooded street.

The district of Faro is under yellow alert until 3pm today due to heavy rain, and then again on Friday from 3am to 9pm according to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).
