Child went into cardiorespiratory arrest and had to be hospitalised
A five-year-old boy was hospitalised after suffering an electric shock due to an exposed severed electrical wire in Lagos’ Christmas lighting last weekend.
The incident, which took place on Saturday (November 30) at the Algarve town’s Jardim da Constituição, was first reported by Correio da Manhã tabloid and has been confirmed by Lagos mayor Hugo Pereira, according to Observador online newspaper.
The child touched the Christmas lights and immediately suffered an electric shock which sent him into cardiorespiratory arrest. According to CM, the boy had to be taken by ambulance to Faro Hospital as the paediatric A&E unit at Portimão Hospital was closed due to a lack of paediatricians.
Luckily, the child recovered and was kept under observation for two days, having been released from the hospital on Monday, reports Observador.
Lagos mayor Hugo Pereira guarantees that the municipal council promptly addressed the issue. He explained that the shock resulted from an electrical discharge when the child touched the lights’ structure.
According to Pereira, the contracted company responsible for the Christmas lights was immediately contacted, and an inspection revealed a severed electrical wire that should not have been exposed.
“The system was turned off, inspected, and the situation was resolved by Sunday,” said the mayor.
