One of the Algarve’s most visually stunning Easter events will take place in São Brás de Alportel, which will host its century-old flower torch show, Festa das Tochas Floridas, on Easter Sunday (March 31).
Streets are adorned with ‘carpets’ of flowers while a procession is carried out with local citizens carrying torches of flowers while chanting religious hymns.
Festivities begin at 9.30am with the unveiling of these stunning carpets around the town, followed at 10am by the opening of a market at Largo de São Sebastião, a handicraft fair outside the local church, and the start of a Resurrection Eucharist at the church.
The flower torch procession will begin at 11am, with another Eucharist scheduled for 1pm and a ‘Cultural Afternoon’ due to begin at 3pm near the church, with stalls selling sweets and ‘petiscos’ (tapas), a contest to elect the “most beautiful flower torches” and live music.
