Portugal’s minister of foreign affairs João Gomes Cravinho is to lead a panel on the “blue economy” at the African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa tomorrow and hopes to address with his counterparts the “disturbing situations” of insecurity in Africa, writes Lusa. The High Level Political Dialogue on Ocean Governance and the Blue Economy, taking place on Thursday, is co-sponsored by Portugal, together with the African Union (AU) Commission and the Comoros, the island country that currently holds the AU presidency. “We’re leading a panel on the blue economy, a major theme of Portuguese foreign policy. The African continent is a continent with enormous potential yet to be realised in terms of the blue economy,” Gomes Cravinho tells Lusa, but it is “unfortunately going through extremely disturbing times in terms of peace and security, and these will be the main topics of conversation: the Sahel, in particular, but also Sudan, Libya and the Great Lakes region,” he said.
