Former Attorney General dies in hospital

Joana Marques Vidal, Portugal’s penultimate Attorney General – and a woman hugely respected for her approach and efforts to tackle establishment corruption – has died today in hospital, after a number of weeks in a coma. Current attorney general Lucília Gago has expressed her “profound regret” over the news, as have many others in the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Ms Marques Vidal was 68 years old.
