Former Bordeira primary school becomes arts centre

Lavrar o Mar behind cultural project inaugurating this Sunday

After a decade of art and culture in constant motion across Aljezur, Monchique and Odemira, Lavrar o Mar is entering a new chapter in its history – “a time of deepening roots, where certain places become home and a starting point for an even stronger commitment to the territory and its communities”. It is in this spirit that EscolaNova – Bordeira Arts Centre emerges, opening its doors this Sunday, March 23.

Born from the desire to transform an abandoned primary school into a space for gathering, creation and artistic experimentation, EscolaNova is a laboratory where local culture and contemporary art intersect, giving rise to new expressions and collective imaginaries.

It is a place where art and participation become driving forces in regenerating the village’s memory and reactivating its identity.

At EscolaNova, artists and locals collaborate in creative labs, performances, workshops and activities that foster “a closer and more informal relationship with art”.

The old Bordeira primary school was granted to Lavrar o Mar by the Municipality of Aljezur for 10 years. The building’s rehabilitation project, developed by architects Ana Jara and Carlos Gomes from the ARTÉRIA collective, was carried out by contractor Fernando das Neves Domingues and funded by the Municipality of Aljezur and the “Bairros Saudáveis” programme.

Now, the EscolaNova – Bordeira Arts Centre is ready to open its doors and is inviting all to attend the inauguration, starting at 11.30am. In attendance will be Mayor of Aljezur José Gonçalves.

There will also be a photo exhibition, entitled “Retratos – The People of Bordeira” by local photographer João Mariano; a documentary about the new arts centre by Thomas Ortegat-Traen will be showing at 5.30pm.
