António Vitorino, a former director general of the International Organisation for Migration, former European Union commissioner and former Socialist government minister, is to chair Portugal’s new National Council for Migration and Asylum, a government source has revealed today. This advisory body will have around 20 members, including two members of parliament nominated by parliament. Its mission will be to “strategically debate and advise the government on matters of migration and asylum policy”. The council was provided for in the government’s Migration Action Plan presented by the centre-right coalition government in June.
