A photography exhibition that aims to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution is on display at the Forum Algarve shopping centre in Faro until Wednesday, August 14.
The goal is also to showcase the environmental protection work of associations and companies from around the world.
The exhibition, entitled ‘Um Mar de Plástico’ (A Sea of Plastic), is located in front of the Mango store and was developed by Algarve-based association aECO (Association for Ocean Studies and Conservation), whose project that envisions a “plastic-free Ria Formosa” was recently named the winner of an international competition organised by the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA).
Sérgio Santos, director of Forum Algarve, says that environmentally-sustainable policies are a daily concern at the shopping centre.
“It is believed that out of the 9.2 billion tons of plastic produced since 1950, around 6.3 billion tons never made it in the rubbish bin and thus was never treated,” said Santos.
He added: “This is a particularly alarming number at a time when habitats and oceans are at serious risk. This is why we want to share this exhibition with our visitors, especially during summer – to show that it is urgent to look after the beaches and oceans and this planet which we all live on”.
