The Council of Ministers has today approved free prescription medicines for the approximately 145,000 beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI). The decision comes into effect from June 1 and will ‘cost’ the government, it says, €10.4 million. But what it means in terms of low-income elderlies’ health is unquantifiable, as it will finally assure this section of society gets access to all the medication it needs, instead of having to choose between which medicines it can afford and which it ‘cannot afford to do without’.
