Prime Minister António Costa has revealed government plans to offer free passes for public transports to families in the Lisbon and Porto areas.
Every family of four will qualify for two free passes, while monthly tariffs will be simplified to either €30 or €40, depending on the length of journeys.
The move is expected to save families up to €100 per month and create greater demand for public transports, consequently cutting down on the use of private vehicles which, over time, should see environmental benefits as well.
Costa rolled out the initiative – described as a ‘political bomb’ in that it comes in the run-up to an election year – during an interview with TVI on Monday.
Finishing touches to the plan are underway, he said.
