Free WiFi on Lisbon Metro

Starting on Tuesday, December 17, Lisbon Metro will be offering its users free WiFi at a number of stations.

For now, the stations will be Marquês de Pombal, Alameda, Campo Grande and Colégio Militar, but the whole metro system is expected to be covered by March next year.

The cost of the initiative – a joint deal between One Media Europe and the Lisbon Metro – comes to €5 million and the hope is to extend it in the future.

“The goal is to expand the WiFi service to other locations where large numbers of people gather – such as stadiums, squares and other popular areas of Lisbon and Porto,” the metro said in a press release.

In the same document, it is explained that the “investment is integrally financed by the advertising that will be included in the WiFi system”.

The company stressed that Lisbon will only be the second metro in Europe to offer this service – the first being the London Underground.
