Funchal, Madeira, decides on new mayor

With PSD Madeira in disagreement over who should step into the shoes of its regional governor, the party’s local authority structure has had no doubts about who should assume the mantle of mayor. Cristina Pedra was already deputy mayor – holding the fort since mayor Pedro Calado was arrested last week – so the move has been a logical one. Her deputy has also been chosen, while everyone else on the council remains in the roles they had before the island was visited by public prosecutors and investigators.
