Dr Maria Alice Pestana Serrano e Silva began her working life in one of Portugal’s largest university hospitals and in 1974 became a consultant in general and family medicine.
Luzdoc had existed, although not with this name initially, in Vila da Luz since 1981 as a basic doctor’s surgery and in 1983 Dr Maria Alice decided she would like to move to the Algarve permanently and began to work at the surgery.
Through implementation of her ideas and vision, the surgery rapidly grew in size from two consulting rooms to twelve and by 1994 it was named Luzdoc.
In 2001 there was further expansion to the present twenty one rooms and Dr Joanna Karamon started working with Luzdoc the same year.
New services were developed benefiting clients individual health needs as a tailor made health provider.
Luzdoc offers 24 hour a day, 365 days a year, onsite clinical services including general family medicine, medical specialities, non-medical health support techniques, onsite complementary diagnostic tests, emergencies and appointments at the clinic, domiciles by doctors and nurses and multinational staff. While a recent addition to these services has also been occupational health.
Another aspect of health, which is becoming more and more relevant in today’s society, is nutrition so a nutritionist has introduced onsite screening and control of food intolerances.
Health is unique to each individual, so Luzdoc is constantly striving to equip its clientele with the best “tools” available to achieve optimum health, therefore preventing disease and thus helping them to obtain the best out of life.
