A highlight of the festive programme in Olhão this month will be two giant bolos-rei (king’s cakes) served to the general public by local pastry chef Filipe Martins.
A slice of bolo-rei will be offered to visitors to the Largo da Restauração from 10am tomorrow (December 15), where two cakes measuring 70 metres and weighing 200 kilos in total will be on display – but not for long, so make sure you get there early!
Try either the traditional bolo-rei with preserved fruits and nuts or the chocolate version with almonds and cashew nuts, the chef’s own creation.
Chef Martins, who will be assisted by 20 people on the day, said: “It will take 10 hours to bake the cakes, so I expect two days of intense work,” he said.
The chef was selected Best Portuguese Chocolatier at the 2010 Óbidos International Chocolate Festival. He makes his own chocolates and sweet delicacies that he sells at his Kubidoce cake shop in Olhão.
