Gibraltar hit for seven at Algarve Stadium

Some 7,600 fans packed into the Algarve Stadium in Faro to see if David could overcome Goliath last weekend, but this time it was Goliath, in the guise of world champions Germany, who ran out comfortable winners.

Former Chelsea forward Schürrle opened the scoring for Joachim Low’s side midway through the first-half, after Germany had missed a penalty just 10 minutes into the game.

The part-timers of Gibraltar did well to hold their illustrious opponents to a single goal at the break, but after the interval the floodgates opened, with André Schürrle netting a hat-trick and Kruse (2), Gündoğan and Bellarabi completing the rout.

Germany is now one point behind Poland, the group leader. Ireland and Scotland drew 1-1 in Dublin as they battle for third spot in the Euro2016 qualifying group. Gibraltar’s next “home” game is against Ireland at the Algarve Stadium on Friday, September 4, before they complete their fixtures when Scotland travel to Faro on Sunday, October 11.

Tickets for the Ireland game will be available online shortly at www.gibraltarfa.com
