On Tuesday, September 6 little Gibraltar will play their first ever World Cup qualifier when they host Greece at the Algarve Stadium, Faro, kick-off 7.45pm.
This could be Gibraltar’s last game at the stadium as special dispensation has been requested to allow FIFA’s latest member to play their home games at the Victoria Stadium on the Rock.
Greece will be returning to the country where they had their greatest football triumph when they surprisingly beat Portugal to lift the EURO 2004 trophy.
The Gibraltar squad includes eight members of Lincoln Red Imps who caused a major upset when they beat Glasgow Celtic 1-0 in the first-leg of a Champions League second qualifying round back in July.
Gibraltar players to watch include former Rochdale, Barnsley and Preston North End defender Scott Wiseman – now turning out for Scunthorpe United – and young keeper Jamie Robba who has recently signed for Torquay United.
The more experienced Greece squad features José Holebas (Watford FC), Andreas Samaris (Benfica) and former Everton striker Apostolos Vellios now with Nottingham Forest.
Tickets, at €10 each, are available online at: www.gibraltarfa.com
