Female agent treated in hospital
A GNR agent was violently assaulted in the early hours of this morning after being called to a domestic violence incident in which a two-year-old child reportedly suffered a dislocated jaw after being kicked in the head.
According to the officer in charge of the GNR General Command, a GNR team was called to intervene at around midnight in Cadaval, in the municipality of Torres Vedras.
A 64-year-old woman – allegedly the aggressor’s mother – as well as the two-year-old child along with the agent were all assaulted, and taken to Torres Vedras Hospital for treatment, writes SIC Notícias.
Local news reports are more forthcoming. Diário do Distrito explains that the woman had suffered a stroke. The female agent was “trying to support the stroke victim, when the aggressor returned to the house and, taking advantage of the distraction, violently assaulted the officer.
“At the time of the attack, the other agent (a man) left to call INEM support, but on his return he was also assaulted.
“After much resistance, the (aggressor) was finally arrested.
“The stroke victim was transported to Torres Vedras Hospital, while the injured female agent also received medical attention and has now been discharged”.
The online does not mention how the child was treated, but he too appears not to have been kept in hospital.
The 39-year-old suspect meantime is being held at Cadaval GNR police station, awaiting his first judicial questioning, which should take place tomorrow.
SIC refers to his having a “history of violence, including against the authorities”, suggesting that he will have been acting “under the effect of alcohol and drugs”.
It is not clear from any of the accounts so far how the elderly woman came to suffer a stroke, but Diário do Distrito describes a “brutal beating”, both of the elderly woman and the child – the alleged aggressor’s nephew – so this may well have precipitated it.
The child’s father was also apparently assaulted, but not to the degree that he required hospital treatment.
Unsurprisingly, Diário do Distrito says the incident has caused enormous local consternation, and is, in the end, a family tragedy.
