Government approves €20 million expense on 600 new vehicles for PSP/ GNR police

PM announces decision in ‘address to nation’

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced last night, in a press conference beamed live over national news bulletins, that the Government is poised to approve an expenditure authorization of more than €20 million for the acquisition of more than 600 vehicles for the PSP and GNR.

The PM took to the podium after a meeting with the Ministers of Justice and Internal Administration, the national director of the PJ, the general commander of the GNR, the national director of the PSP and the deputy secretary general of the country’s Internal Security System.

His message was essentially that “Portugal is a safe country, it is indeed one of the safest countries in the world, but this context must be worked on and achieved every day” – and thus extra investment in the police is necessary.

The message came on ‘a good day’ for justice in Portugal: the ‘megaoperation’ in hunting down suspects for the torching of a Lisbon bus during the rioting of last month resulted in three arrests (see story to come), while the combined operation “Portugal always safe”, involving several police and administrative forces has already resulted in the dismantling of two criminal networks involving illegal immigration and human trafficking.
