Government boost for social welfare organisations

Good news for social welfare organisations in 2014 – the Government will be sparing them from IVA (VAT) and entering into a whole host of new cooperation agreements which should translate into thousands of new jobs.

Minister of Solidarity Pedro Mota Soares announced the news during the opening of a centre for the disabled (Centro de Apoio a Deficientes Luís da Silva) in the Alentejo borough of Borba.

“We are reinforcing the support that the government provides social solidarity institutions because we believe that, in these establishments, money is managed and invested with more quality and proximity than on a central level,” he said.

The minister confirmed that new jobs were in the making. “There will be over 211 cooperation agreements,” he revealed, which will mean “an extra 3,441 job posts”, most of which will be concerned with care for the handicapped.

Meantime, the new centre in the Alentejo will offer between 80-100 jobs and care for 70 full time residents, while running a day centre for 50.
