Portugal’s minority PSD/CDS government (united with independents under the banner of “AD”, meaning Democratic Alliance) has come through two relatively rough days of debate on its four-year programme, and is now in ‘full functions’: starting with a meeting with police unions to try and negotiate various issues over pay/ conditions. Prime minister Luís Montenegro has pledged “continuity, with the firm commitment of Portugal to the values of the European Union and the reinforcement of the European project, because this is the best way to safeguard the national interest and well-being of the Portuguese people”. The PM added that his government will now run an “intense campaign” to try and encourage citizens to vote in the European elections in June.
