On a day when Spain, Ireland and Norway have announced that on May 28 (next Tuesday), they will recognise the independence of Palestine, Portugal has said that it wants to too BUT is “trying to achieve the greatest possible consensus among the members of the European Union” before coming right out and saying it. “It’s just a question of the moment,” said a source for the ministry of foreign affairs, pointing out that Portugal has a mediating position in the EU on this issue and is therefore “in consultations with various States to reach the greatest consensus and bring the greatest number of countries to the solution” of two States: Israel and Palestine. Meantime, Slovenia has announced that it will be joining the recognition of the State of Palestine “in the coming days”.
