Greenhouse gas emissions in Portugal fell by 6.3% in 2023

Greenhouse gas emissions fell by 6.3% last year in Portugal, the second warmest year in the last 93 years, the National Statistics Institute (INE) has revealed. The reduction in emissions, compared to 2022, was due to a decrease from the energy sector (-9.1%) and industry (-3.3%), “in line with the 24.3% increase in electricity production from renewable sources (75.8% of the total) and the decrease in industrial production”, said INE, noting that the industrial production index decreased by 3.1% compared to 2022. “With the largest population increase since the beginning of the 21st century (+123,105 inhabitants), in a context of economic growth (private consumption increased by 1.9%), there was a 1.7% increase in domestic consumption of materials extracted from the environment,” INE emphasised in its information published online.
