Guimarães elected European Green Capital 2026

Guimarães has been elected European Green Capital 2026 – the second Portuguese city to win the title, after Lisbon in 2020 – “recognising the ongoing commitment” of the municipality to environmental sustainability. The European Green Capital Award, organised by the European Commission and awarded today in Valencia, Spain, recognises and rewards local efforts to improve the environment and thus the economy and quality of life in cities. Guimarães was competing against the cities of Heilbronn (Germany) and Klagenfurt (Austria). Tangible results include €600,000 in financial support, which will be used for sustainability projects and initiatives.
