Hail storm leaves Lisbon covered in white – Algarve also affected

Intense bouts of hail earlier this morning (January 17) left large areas of Lisbon completely cloaked in white, with media services reporting floods throughout the city, and hail-filled streets, mostly in the area of Benfica. Hail has also been reported in Vila do Bispo, in the western Algarve, this morning.
Between 8.30 and 8.50am alone, the Sapadores de Lisboa fire service received no less than 11 distress calls due to flooding.
Parede, a parish in the municipality of Cascais, registered similar conditions only an hour before, with multiple calls to the local fire department reporting floods.
The national Civil Protection authority (ANPC) had launched a yellow alert for the continent at 0.00 hours on Friday morning due to the possibility of heavy rain, snowfall, rough seas, and strong winds.
The alert will stay active until 8pm on Saturday, when the weather is expected to improve.
