Half of the people without a job the third quarter of 2023 were without work in the last quarter, with almost 25% having found work, Statistics Portugal (INE) announced today. According to the statistics on flows between labour market states, of the total number of people unemployed in the third quarter, 51.9% were still unemployed in the fourth quarter (169,400), 24.5% became employed (80,000) and 23.5% became inactive (76,800). Of the total number of people who were employed in the third quarter, 95.6% (4,795,200) remained in that state in the fourth quarter, while 1.8% became unemployed (90,900) and 2.6% became inactive (129,400). INE said that the result is that the net flow of employment (total entries minus total exits) between quarters was negative by 35,000 people, while the net flow of unemployment was positive by 28,500 people. Thus, the total number of people who moved into unemployment (185,200) was higher than the total number who left (156,800).
