Heatwave: Government declares alert from midnight Saturday due to risk of fires

Mainland Portugal is bracing for its third heatwave of the summer

Portugal’s minister of internal administration, José Luís Carneiro, announced on Friday that the whole of the country’s mainland will be in a state of alert from midnight on Saturday to midnight on Tuesday, due to the risk of wildfires.

“We have taken the decision to determine the alert situation for the 21st, 22nd and 23rd – Sunday, Monday and Tuesday – with a review on Monday evening, with a view to reassessing the need to maintain or change the alert situation,” he said, adding: “All this applies to the mainland.”

The minister made the announcement after a meeting with other government officials and emergency commanders at the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), in Carnaxide, west of Lisbon.

Mainland Portugal is bracing for its third heatwave of the summer, with maximum temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius foreseen from Saturday.
