Help re-build Riding for Disabled Barlavento after Storm Martinho

Facilities and equipment destroyed or lost

The great Storm Martinho, which struck Portugal with such devastating force during the night of March 19-20,wreaked much havoc in the Algarve. One of the worst hit areas, however, was the village of Bensafrim, near Lagos, where all the facilities and equipment of Riding for Disabled Barlavento (RDB) were destroyed or lost.

This wonderful organisation, which does such amazing work for physically or mentally impaired children and youngsters, was sadly forced to tell their much-loved patients that, for the time being, RDB could no longer look after them.

This sad situation must remain until equipment and facilities, much of which is essential for safety, are restored. They were told, happily, that none of their lovely horses were injured.

These photos show better than words the extent of the desolation and the amount of work and expense necessary to restore everything and resume service.

RDB is blessed with many volunteers, however, who have been tireless in their efforts to clear up and salvage what was possible.  Also, with particular thanks to the generous response from Medal Insurance and Blevins Franks, a new timber shed for storing and maintaining equipment and services has already been purchased.

Much equipment still needs to be replaced however, so your help in meeting the considerable cost of achieving this would be very much appreciated.

The RDB website – www.riding4disabled.com – not only shows what wonderful things equine treatment can do for the disabled but also has a link for contributions, as has their Facebook page; or if you prefer to make a direct transfer, here is RDB’s IBAN:

Do please help.
