One in three obese children in Portugal suffers from high blood pressure; numbers similar to those in the adult population. The study, by paediatrician Carla Rêgo, was carried out over eight years and involved 563 children and youths between the ages of two and 18. Dr Rêgo is responsible for introducing a paediatric weight clinic in Portugal and it was during consultations at the Hospital de São João in Porto that she came to her conclusions.
