The Chinese semi-autonomous region of Hong Kong has today banned the import of chicken meat and derivatives, including eggs, from the Lisbon district, following the detection of cases of bird flu. Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety (CFS) said in a statement that the decision was taken “to protect public health”, following a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health. The territory imported around 110 tonnes of frozen chicken meat from Portugal in the first nine months of 2024, according to official figures quoted in the statement. Bird flu was detected on a poultry farm in Sintra (Greater Lisbon) and control and eradication measures have been implemented, the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV) announced yesterday. As this news went up online, Macau also announced a similar ban.
