Hospital patient, 65, dies days after being assaulted by another patient

Ana Peixoto Veiga was in hospital receiving palliative care

Six days after a cancer patient was assaulted by another patient at Braga Hospital, she has died.

According to Correio da Manhã, Ana Peixoto Veiga, in hospital for palliative care, was “left disfigured by the attack” – which is still apparently under investigation.

Other reports attest to her “very sensitive clinical condition” beforehand. Afterwards – certainly according to Correio da Manhã – her “state of health worsened”.

The assault appears to have come after another patient, “confined to his bed” (by restraints) suffered a psychotic episode, in which he ‘broke free’, going on to attack Ana Veiga, a former textile worker from Panoias.

An autopsy will now take place to determine whether Ana Veiga died as a result of the assault, says CM.

SIC however does not confirm CM’s information: the news station says that Braga hospital “did not say what state the victim was left in, nor what type of assistance she received as a result of the violent attack. It also did not confirm that the aggressor, also a cancer patient, suffered a psychotic episode”.
