The Hospital Particular do Algarve (HPA) is offering a new spinal surgery technique called endoscopic spine surgery, which aims to decompress neurological structures such as the spinal cord and nerve roots.
The new technique has been introduced by the neurosurgery team at HPA Alvor, providing “another innovative option in minimally invasive surgery in the region,” the private health group says.
“This procedure allows access to injured structures through a small incision (7 to 10 mm) with minimal damage to surrounding tissues, including skin, nerves, and muscles,” HPA explains.
“Unlike traditional open surgical techniques, endoscopic spinal surgery does not require the destruction of muscle structures that support the spine, preserving them and reducing risks such as adhesions and fibrosis. This approach is particularly effective for procedures like removing a herniated disc, offering greater safety, precision, and speed,” it adds.
Endoscopic spinal surgery is considered minimally invasive, leading to “quick recovery and a fast return to an active lifestyle.” It is also associated with fewer complications, minimal pain, and a low risk of infection.
