Huge drug bust leads to dozens of arrests at BPM festival

Police have arrested 62 people and seized over 4,000 doses of drugs at the BPM electronic musical festival which took place between Friday and Monday (September 21-24) in Parchal, Lagoa and Praia da Rocha, Portimão.

According to a statement by GNR police, 53 of the people that were arrested were due to drug trafficking, six were for drunk driving and one was for driving without a licence.

The impressive amount of drugs confiscated included over 2,000 doses of MDMA, 790 of amphetamines, 778 of cocaine, 417 of hashish, 44 of heroin and seven of cannabis.

The 62 people who were arrested are aged between 21 and 34 years and were released pending trial.

The BPM festival is regarded as one of the most popular electronic music festivals in the world and was held in the Algarve for the first time last year, having welcomed fans from over 90 countries as well as over 180 top international DJs and some of the biggest “up and comers” in underground dance music.

Over 5,000 people are said to have taken part in this year’s event, travelling from Spain, Italy and even North and South America.
