Hundreds of firefighters battle wildfires in north

Hundreds of firefighters have been battling wildfires in the north of Portugal (Vimioso, near the border with Spain), and Carregosa, in the Parque Natural de Montesinho – both locations in the municipality of Bragança. The Vimioso fire was particularly vicious, jumping the border at one point into Spanish territory. Villagers were given shelter in a church, but no homes were damaged. The fire that is believed to have started during a thunder storm was finally dominated early this morning. Meantime, the blaze around Carregosa, again in scrubland, is entering its second day. Wind is complicating combat, along with the terrain, offering poor access. According to latest reports already over 400 hectares have been burnt. For the time being no ’causes’ of this second fire appear to have been established.
