Hundreds of surgeries delayed as nurses continue six-day strike

Hundreds of surgeries have been cancelled as nurses up and down the country continue their six-day strike which started yesterday (Wednesday).

Operations will all have to be reprogrammed as industrial action particularly affects the north and centre of the country.

In the Algarve, around 40 operations were pulled on Wednesday. More may be added to the list as the days go by.

Today (Thursday) nurses are demonstrating outside various hospitals and health units in Porto and Coimbra, reinforcing the message that they want new government proposals or the strike will just continue.

A mass protest in Lisbon is scheduled for early next week if a meeting tomorrow at the health ministry doesn’t achieve the desired negotiational breakthrough.

A bit like the teachers’ battles with this government, nurses are demanding ‘respect’. They claim their profession has been railroaded and that they are all pushed to points of exhaustion in understaffed, underfunded departments.
