Hundreds of teachers are protesting today outside the Ministry of Education in Lisbon, as schools reconvene for the Spring term (2º periodo). This particular protest is against government proposals to alter the candidacy regime for job vacancies. Meantime, three teaching syndicates have vowed to make January a “month of struggle” in a bid to pressure the government to improve various long-standing employment issues. Industrial action will undoubtedly disturb classes – particularly as an open-ended strike by STOP (one of the unions involved) has now extended to non-teaching staff.
