Hunting to be banned in Monchique’s fire blackened areas until next year

In a bid to give animal species the time and space to repopulate fire-blackened hillsides of Monchique, the government has issued a hunting ban, to stay in place until May next year.

From today there should be no ‘shooting’ – or any other kind of hunting – in the areas affected by fires that raged throughout the boroughs of Monchique, Odemira, Portimão and Silves in August.

The ban extends to a protection belt of 250-metres around the areas – with one exception: hunters can still hunt wild boar due to the fact that this species has proliferated in recent years.
