Iconic Algarve radio station closes after 35 years on air

Rádio Solar Algarve had been on air since 1986

Rádio Solar Algarve, the beloved radio station based in Albufeira, officially ended its broadcasts at midnight on Sunday (September 15) after 35 years on air.

Founded in May 1986 by Paul Buick, KISS FM former founder, Rádio Solar Algarve was known for its eclectic programming, offering a unique mix of musical genres and a wide array of local content – from regional news to specialised shows – earning it a loyal following throughout the Algarve. “Over the decades, the station cultivated deep ties with the community, being recognised for its dedication to culture and local events,” it said in a statement to the press.

Since 2015, Rádio Solar was under the stewardship of a dedicated team that sought to revitalize the station. By embracing independent programming and non-mainstream music, they aimed to preserve the station’s authenticity and maintain its distance from commercial radio trends. Despite these efforts, external pressures, rather than internal performance or community support, led to the decision to cease operations.

“It was a difficult but inevitable choice, driven by the station owner’s desire to refocus its assets on a different project,” the statement reads.

Rádio Solar was known for its “innovative and inclusive spirit, offering a platform for local and national musicians, as well debates on as social, cultural and economic themes that directly affected the region’s residents. For many, it was more than a simple radio station: it was a meeting point for the community, reflecting the realities and interests of Albufeira and surrounding areas.”

The station, whose headquarters was located on Albufeira’s busy avenue Avenida dos Descobrimentos, was also known for being a major supporter of local events, such as music festivals and cultural happenings, playing a key role in their promotion.

The announcement has caused a wave of sorrow among listeners, who are lamenting what they believe is a “huge loss for Albufeira”.

“I grew up listening to Rádio Solar and felt like it was a part of our identity,” said a frequent listener.

The future of the 94.0MHz frequence is “uncertain, and there are no additional details on which radio station will take it over.”

Rádio Solar is the second regional radio station to close this year in the Algarve. In July, Monchique’s iconic Rádio Fóia handed over its frequency (97.1) to Mega Hits radio, which is part of the Renascença group. The radio’s management made the request as they faced financial difficulties due to a decrease in advertising revenue.
