Improvement works on Northern Line exceed budget by around €20 million

The time it has taken from inception to completion has meant that improvement works to the country’s northern railway line between Espinho and Vila Nova de Gaia will have exceeded the original pre-‘Ferrovia 2020’ budget by around €20 million. The original cost of €55.3 million was budgeted in 2016. Works were meant to have started the year later, finishing in 2019. But everything got delayed; the Covid pandemic and inflation got in the way – and now the government will have to find another €20 million to pay for the consequences.
