INEM emergency services in the Algarve are responding to an unprecedented average of 300 to 350 emergencies a day, when the previous record had been 285.
An additional response vehicle and two INEM health professionals on motorbikes have been added to the regional squad to address the new peak in cases, reports Diário de Notícias.
It adds that the increase also forced nurses at Portimão Hospital to carry out 1,691 overtime hours in July.
