Inquiry blames firefighter for his own death

The former partner of fire chief José Fernandes, who died firefighting in Lousã in 2020, has been shocked by the results of an inquiry which blamed him for his own death.

“They said JosĂ© decided to go down the hill of his own volition, as if he wasn’t working, as if he was irresponsible”, she told journalists, not accepting that the inquiry ‘archived’ a process for compensation.

Said the woman: “I just hope the families of the firefighters that died this year are supported and not abandoned as I have been”.

The ‘full story’ on this sad situation will be aired this evening on CMTV – but referring back to the original story, a source told Expresso at the time: “This was down to the lack of experience of National Command. It’s important that everyone listens to the communications (in which the men can be heard desperately asking for help) to learn what has to be avoided if this kind of situation happens again”.
