An inquiry has been opened into the death of a 29-year-old Irishman in a police cell in Albufeira.
Ryan Chan was arrested last Tuesday following an alleged assault on his partner. In a statement the GNR confirmed that in the early hours of Wednesday morning he was found lifeless in his cell.
His partner, also in her 20s, had to be treated in hospital for stab wounds. She has since been released, and will make a full recovery, say reports.
The couple had travelled to Albufeira to “attend a social occasion”.
Portuguese police are investigating and Ireland’s gardaí police are liaising with the Portuguese authorities and the families, says Irish media.
In a statement to RTÉ News, the Office of the Portuguese Attorney General in Lisbon said: “As is always the case in these types of situations, an inquiry has been ordered along with an autopsy.”
Irish online extra.ie says the investigation will include “an examination of how Mr Chan was able to self-harm while in custody”, adding that “several Irish people have died abroad this summer”.
