Investigation opens into stabbing of young Moroccans by group of Indians

PJ police trawl CCTV footage to determine identities of aggressors

Another outburst of racial violence has shaken inner city Porto – a focus of a number of recent upsets.

The latest involved the stabbing of two young Moroccan men by a group of 8-10 Indians on Monday night.

According to reports, the violence took place close to the top deck of the iconic Dom Luís bridge.

The group of Indians “fled the scene following the violent aggressions”, writes Correio da Manhã – “and now inspectors are trying to identify them through the CCTV system installed in the downtown distinct, and in the various commercial establishments” in the area.

The case is being treated as “a situation of attempted murder. The two victims, aged 24 and 28, where stabbed in the head, chest, arms and legs. A knife and an iron implement were used.

“After the men were stabbed, they lay prostrate on the ground”, says the paper. Passers-by rushed to their aid, alerting ambulance services and police.

One of the young men was transported to Hospital Santo António, the other to São João.

For the time being, says the paper, “the reasons for the attack are unknown”.

Porto has been suffering an outbreak of ‘racial incidents’, with reports of Moroccans and Algerians ‘stealing at all hours in the streets’ and attacks by so-called nationalists against immigrants.
