IT glitches ‘lose’ some of today’s voters in European elections

Today’s elections to the European Parliament are running smoothly, say reports, but technical problems have been reported at dozens of polling stations across the country. Mobile voting, which is taking place for the first time in these elections, requires polling stations to have internet access in order to confirm the digital electoral roll and register the vote. But because of the slowness of the computer system, there have been people who have given up waiting and gone off to enjoy their Sunday without voting – and cases where voting has had to be suspended for at least 20 minutes, “which has caused queues to accumulate”, admits SIC Notícias. By midday, over 14% of citizens eligible to vote had done so, according to Lusa.
