MotoGP championship may not return to the Algarve in 2025
Cristóvão Norte – vice-president of the PSD parliamentary group and president of PSD Algarve – has released a statement underlining the importance of keeping the MotoGP championship in the region.
“It is very important to maintain this event, for the Algarve, for Portugal, for tourism. I know that a great effort is being made by all parties involved: the racetrack, the government, and the tourism authorities, to make this possible. Everyone is committed to working on it. I am confident, but these events are highly sought after due to the returns they offer,” said Norte.
He stressed, however, that keeping the event in the Algarve would be a “modest way to honour the memory of the extraordinary Paulo Pinheiro,” the founder of the Portimão racetrack who passed away in July.
Norte is the first person linked to the ruling PSD government to publicly voice support for the MotoGP to remain in the Algarve since it was reported that the championship may not make its way back to the sunny southern region.
Since then, both Portugal’s star rider Miguel Oliveira and Italy’s two-time MotoGP champion Pecco Bagnaia have expressed their dismay about the race’s potential end – at least in 2025.
